The concept of stewardship has always fascinated Amelia Thompson. A second year student in the Forest Management Technology program at Montgomery Community College in Troy, North Carolina, Thompson was searching for a way to serve God and people in the setting she prefers: nature. “The idea of caring for land and the trees on it came naturally to me because it represents a lot of my upbringing,” explains Thompson. She was raised and homeschooled in Morganton, a city on the Catawba River in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. MCC Delivers Firearms Training to Special Team of Soldiers

Montgomery Community College welcomed a special guest to campus in June, Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Reummler from the Fort Bragg Army Base. A friend of MCC Gunsmithing Instructor Matthew R. Mutarelli, Reummler was onsite to present certificates of appreciation to both Mutarelli and gunsmithing student Lew Jones. The two MCC representatives developed and taught a customized firearms training class for seven students under Reummler’s command: a cohort of U.S. Army nurse anesthetists! A nurse anesthetist is an advanced-practice nurse who administers anesthesia for surgery or other medical procedures. Eligible 2021 MCHS Grads Receive Free Tuition and Fees at MCC For Up to Two Years

North Carolina’s Longleaf Commitment Grant is a program for 2021 Montgomery County High School graduates who attend Montgomery Community College in the Fall 2021 semester. MCHS graduates may be eligible to receive this grant to cover tuition and fees toward a degree or to attain transfer credit. Full-time eligible students will receive $700 to $2,800 per academic year for a total of two years. Less than full-time students may receive a partial award. The Longleaf Commitment Grant ends at the conclusion of the 2023 spring semester. Trailblazer to Share Nursing Talents in Her Community

Madison Bullins knew during her tenure at North Moore High School that a career in healthcare was in her future. Biomedical and health science classes sparked her interest, and a senior year spent in a Certified Nurse Assistant program sealed the deal. MCC Nursing Graduates Celebrate Together, with Distance

Unlike last year’s nursing graduates who experienced this rite of passage in their vehicles, the 2021 cohort celebrated in person on May 11, 2021 with a little bit of distance in between. Fourteen students, four with an Associate Degree in Nursing and 10 from the Practical Nursing program received a commemorative pin, a nurse’s camp as well as a pottery keepsake to remember their accomplishments. Juliana Inman Gains Career Confidence during Pandemic

Juliana Inman is looking forward to serving as president of MCC’s Student Government Association. A future graduate of the Montgomery County Early College, Juliana finished her Associate Degree in Science a year early and will spend her fourth and final year at MCC earning a certificate in the Medical Assisting Program. In her freshman year, Juliana had to deal with some minor health issues, and during that process developed a close relationship with a pharmacist. As they worked together to fine-tune some of the medications Juliana needed, she became fascinated with pharmacology. MCC Hosts Technical Rescuer Class, Locates Lost Hunter

During the month of October, 36 emergency service men and women, representing 12 agencies, met at Montgomery Community College to complete the 60-hour North Carolina Technical Rescue Wilderness Rescue Certification Program. These students learned mapping, compass reading, tracking, survival, wilderness rescue, along with many other valuable wilderness survival lessons. During the class, a hunter was reported lost in the woods in Montgomery County. In support of their practical application exercise, the class used methods they learned during instruction to attempt to locate the hunter and were successful! Montgomery Community College (MCC) is pleased to announce the opening of its new Student Counseling Center! The facility is located in Room 129 in Blair Hall (formerly known as building 100), just around the corner from its previous location. When students enter the new Center they will be met with an open, spacious common area with furniture for relaxing as well as new computer stations for students who need a quiet space to work. MCC Announces Stipends and Scholarships for Firefighting Students

MCC students pursuing firefighting designations are eligible to receive either a stipend or a scholarship through a firefighter recruitment and retention initiative funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Foundation of North Carolina. Both adult and high school students are eligible for the program, classes will begin in January 2021. The BCBS Foundation of NC Firefighter Stipend and Scholarship Program provides stipends of $500 per term or scholarships up to $1,000 per term for eligible Montgomery Community College students pursuing NC Firefighter Certification courses.
