MCC Inducts Students into Honor Society

Thirty-one Montgomery Community College students were inducted into its Phi Theta Kappa honor society on April 26th, including several students from prior years who weren’t able to enjoy an in-person ceremony due to pandemic constraints. The purpose of the honor society is to promote scholarship, the development of leadership and service and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students. Inductees have worked hard to meet the eligibility for Phi Theta Kappa, completing at least 12 semester hours of associate degree general education course work with a grade point average of 3.5. David Steed Examining Many Facets of Agriculture

David Steed is a Career & College Promise student attending Montgomery Central High School and Montgomery Community College and will soon graduate with his Associate in Arts degree. He has been accepted into the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Program at North Carolina State University, where he intends to major in agricultural and human sciences or agricultural and resource economics. David was exposed to the NC State campus at a young age, and never really considered attending another college. He comes from an agriculture-focused family with both peaches and chickens in his lineage. His father, Joe Steed, is Director of Hatcheries at Pilgrim’s and an alumnus of NC State.

After a year off due to COVID, MCC was thrilled to welcome area companies back to campus to celebrate Manufacturing Day 2021. Six businesses and two providers were on hand to meet with hundreds of MCHS and MCC students to promote the exciting careers awaiting them right here in Montgomery County. Autumn Care of Biscoe, Carolina Aseptic, Jordan Lumber Company, McRae Industries, Mohawk Industries and Troy Lumber Company joined Apprenticeship Montgomery and NCWorks set up booths beneath a large white tent, meeting students MCHS juniors and seniors throughout the day on October 28th. MCC Foundation Hosts Fourth Annual Shooting Clay Tournament

Ten teams comprised of 40 shooters headed down to Ellerbe on a gorgeous fall day for the MCC Foundation’s fourth annual Shooting Clay Tournament. DeWitt’s Outdoor Sports hosted the competition which featured 14 shooting stations with two shooting boxes at each station. The course, over a mile long, winds through wooded areas, fields and duck pond habitats. MCC Forestry Program Finds Success at Cradle Competition

If someone said you lived near the Cradle of Forestry, would you know what they were talking about? Nestled in Western North Carolina, below the Blue Ridge Parkway, is the birthplace of forestry in America. A national historic site, the land was purchased by George and Edith Vanderbilt during a major logging boom. Dr. Carl Schenck, a forestry educator from Germany, helped the Vanderbilts with land management and re-forestation efforts that define sustainable forestry to this day. MCC Conveys Annual Scholarships to Deserving Students

On the evening of August 25th, the Montgomery Community College Foundation awarded over $58,000 to students to attend the fall 2021 semester. These scholarships will be funded in the spring 2022 semester as well, putting education within reach of so many deserving students. Of the 62 scholarships awarded, 14 were to Montgomery Scholars, new students attending MCC right out of high school. This year, students and their donors were able to meet each other in person during a brief ceremony. Bear Creek Arsenal Outfits MCC Armorer’s Class

In another act of generosity following its donation to renovate MCC’s bluing room, Bear Creek Arsenal supplied MCC’s gunsmithing program with AR-15 rifles to enhance student learning in its armorer’s class. More than two-thirds of an MCC gunsmithing student’s class time is spent in its shops, bringing theory to a practical application in a hands-on setting. In the case of these AR-15s, students will gain valuable experience diagnosing, disassembling and reassembling the automatic weapons. Bear Creek Arsenal (Sanford) specializes in the manufacture of AR-15 and AR-10 rifles, complete uppers, lowers, barrels, bolt carrier groups and automatic rifle parts.
