James Atkins, Police Chief for the Town of Troy, North Carolina is teaching at Montgomery Community College tonight, as he has off and on for the last 18 years. MCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program runs September through April, with a minimum of 660 hours of classroom time. Successful BLET students master 36 separate topics from physical fitness, crime scene investigation, first responder, testifying in court, human trafficking, constitutional law and more. Tonight, Atkins is teaching a section on crime prevention. MCC Gunsmithing Students Return to SHOT Show

With the pandemic behind them, 24 MCC Gunsmithing students and two instructors made their annual pilgrimage to attend the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s SHOT Show in Las Vegas in January. The students, members of MCC’s Gunsmithing Club, sold enough raffle tickets during the organization’s fall fundraiser to pay for attendee travel and housing. With students bringing their own money for food and entertainment, the group arrived in Nevada for work and fun. MCC Forestry Program Takes Home Quiz Bowl Trophy from Cradle Competition

If someone said you lived near the Cradle of Forestry, would you know what they were talking about? Nestled in Western North Carolina, below the Blue Ridge Parkway, is the birthplace of forestry in America. A national historic site, the land was purchased by George and Edith Vanderbilt during a major logging boom. Dr. Carl Schenck, a forestry educator from Germany, helped the Vanderbilts with land management and re-forestation efforts that define sustainable forestry to this day. When George died in 1914, Edith sold 87,000 acres to the U.S. Forest Service, creating the Pisgah National Forest we know and love. “I had a great dentist and hygienist growing up, and that’s how I ended up choosing this path.” Ashton Williams, a lifelong resident of Troy, is in her first semester of MCC’s year-long Dental Assistant Program. Dr. Donald Davis was William’s provider, whom she credits with her enthusiasm for the dentistry field. Ashleigh Thompson grew up in Star, and graduated from East Montgomery High School in 2015. While in high school she took Career & College promise classes, knocking-out many of college core requirements like English, math and science. “I’ve always really enjoyed the classroom,” admits Thompson. “Even at a young age, I was a natural student. I have always loved learning and obtaining new skills. Melissa Shaver is nearing completion of her bachelor’s degree from Gardner-Webb University, in fact she was recently recommended by the faculty for membership in the Gamma Beta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. A successful student, Melissa is studying human services with an emphasis on mental health counseling; she expects to use her talents as a licensed mental health or school counselor. “I’ve always been an advocate,” explains Shaver. “As far back as I can remember, I’ve enjoyed helping people. Montgomery Community College student Cheryl-Lyn Chandler became interested in the environment as a middle-schooler. Her mother got her involved in a North Carolina Envirothon competition, which is organized around five categories: soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues. Cheryl-Lyn succeeded in the competition, and the experience laid the groundwork for what would become a burgeoning interest in forestry. Cheryl-Lyn hails from a military family, most of which is still residing in Cherry Point, North Carolina. Reagan Hunsucker is Montgomery Community College’s Student Government Association President for 2022-2023. She is a senior at the Montgomery County Early College, and an employee at Sir Pizza and Standard Drug in Troy. Brittany Vaughn and Michelle Morgan took very different paths on their journeys to become nurses, but fate brought them together at Montgomery Community College.
