MCC Celebrates “Made in Montgomery Day”

Montgomery Community College normally celebrates a fall Manufacturing Day, but this year they decided to expand the reach of the event to all businesses, not just manufacturers, calling it Made in Montgomery Day! Companies in attendance included Troy Lumber, Mohawk Industries, Inc., Saputo, Inc., Mountaire Farms, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Sandy Ridge Assisted Living, NEXT Gen, Montgomery County Schools, Myrick Construction, Southern Corrections – Department of Adult Corrections and McGee Brothers- Carolina Masonry Services. On October 25th, companies set up tables under a big white tent located between Montgomery Central High School and MCC. MCC Forestry Student Receives NCFA Scholarship

Every year, the North Carolina Forestry Association’s Forest Education and Conservation Foundation offers a scholarship to a Montgomery Community College (MCC) Forest Management Technology student. This year’s scholarship winner is Andrew Martin (Drew), a second-year student in the program. After receiving an undergraduate degree in history from the University of North Carolina Asheville in his early 20s, Drew returned to school later in life to pursue a career in forestry. Drew’s education has taken him on a rather scenic route. He attended several public universities throughout the state before settling in Asheville, and after graduation had the opportunity to teach English in Spain for a year. Upon returning to North

MCC’s Forestry Club Competes at Annual Cradle Competition

MCC left its mark at the John G. Palmer Woodsmen’s Meet, held in the Pisgah National Forest on October 7, 2023. Competing against other Forest Management colleges like Haywood Community College, Mountain Gateway Community College, Wayne Community College, North Carolina State University and Penn State Mont Alto, MCC achieved impressive placements in various events! MCC Celebrates Annual Scholarship Ceremony

On August 29th, around 75 Montgomery Community College students received financial awards from the very special people and organizations who endow scholarships at the College. Students and their donors were able to meet each other in person during a ceremony and post-event reception. The evening began with the presentation of merit awards, which are scholarships are based on a student’s performance in their program and recommendations from their instructors.  The next group of awards, in its third year, were scholarships awarded to continuing education students through an established endowed fund. This scholarship assists continuing education students taking classes in a variety of programs including, phlebotomy, taxidermy, gunsmithing, welding and more.

MCC Welcomes New SGA President, Judith Mendoza Hernandez

Meet MCC student and Student Government Association President Judith Mendoza Hernandez! Judith was born in Pinehurst, lived in Biscoe for five years, then started first grade in Troy where she has lived ever since. She attended Montgomery West Middle School, works an outside job today, and is currently enrolled in the Career & College Promise (CCP) program at Montgomery Central High School. The CCP dual-enrollment program offers Judith tuition-free college classes at MCC, saving her time and money as she progresses toward a college degree. Since he was 10 years old, Alexander Velasco Rosales (Alex) had a pretty good idea he would end up as a gunsmith. As a middle schooler, Alex was fascinated by guns, his first being a typical BB gun. He spent two years at East Montgomery High School, moved to Montgomery Central High School for his final two years, and it was during this time when Alex obtained his first real gun: a German Sport GSG16 MP5 Clone, chambered in .22 LR. Fourteen students, three with an Associate Degree in Nursing and eleven from the Practical Nursing program received a commemorative pin and a nurse’s cap to remember their accomplishments. Thirty-three Montgomery Community College students were inducted into the college’s Beta Xi Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society on April 27th. Family and friends were in attendance to celebrate the occasion. The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to promote scholarship, the development of leadership and service, and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students. This year’s Inductees have worked hard to meet the eligibility for Phi Theta Kappa, completing at least 12 semester hours of associate degree general education coursework with a grade point average of 3.5. Nominated for the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award, Reagan Hunsucker of Troy will graduate this spring with an Associate in Science degree, a Nurse Aide I Certificate and a Phlebotomy Certificate. In 2004, the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents created the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award as a way to recognize student leadership on a statewide level while also honoring former Governor Bob Scott. Every ten years, institutions of higher learning (including Montgomery Community College) go through a re-accreditation process. The process of accreditation is similar to an audit, in that a third-party examines the functions and performance of the College, to make sure its activities are aligned with its mission to serve students, and to confirm the institution’s policies and procedures are functioning properly to ensure student success. The third-party that examines MCC is called the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, referred to as “SACSCOC” among participating member schools.
