MCC Foundation Hosts Fifth Annual Shooting Clay Tournament

Fifteen teams comprised of 60 shooters headed down to Ellerbe on a gorgeous fall morning for the MCC Foundation’s fifth annual Shooting Clay Tournament. DeWitt’s Outdoor Sports hosted the competition which featured 14 shooting stations with two shooting boxes at each station. The course, over a mile long, winds through wooded areas, fields and duck pond habitats. The annual contest also offers a flurry shoot, where all team members aim at clays released simultaneously from DeWitt’s state-of-the-art automated traps. “This event is one of our favorites, and is becoming very popular. We had 15 teams participate this year, our highest count yet,” explains Emily Tucker, MCC’s Director of Resource Development.

Montgomery Community College is pleased to welcome Michael Gardner as its new Facilitator of Short-Term Gunsmithing Courses. Michael spent his earlier years in the state of New York where he worked in a variety of fields including construction, banking and investments, operating a dairy/creamery and managing a dental office. He also served with various Non-Governmental Organizations in Germany as they welcomed and settled refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. MCC Gunsmithing Students Return to SHOT Show

With the pandemic behind them, 24 MCC Gunsmithing students and two instructors made their annual pilgrimage to attend the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s SHOT Show in Las Vegas in January. The students, members of MCC’s Gunsmithing Club, sold enough raffle tickets during the organization’s fall fundraiser to pay for attendee travel and housing. With students bringing their own money for food and entertainment, the group arrived in Nevada for work and fun. Brian Gerdes has led a fascinating life, with fulfilling work, world travel, exciting career opportunities and a great family situation. Despite all that, he isn’t content to sit back and relax; Brian is exploring his next chapter, and he thinks the world of gunsmithing might be the best installment yet. MCC Gunsmithing Program Receives Firearms Donation from Beretta USA

The Montgomery Community College Gunsmithing Program recently received 363 rifles from Beretta USA. A portion were purchased, but the bulk of the rifles were donated. MCC students will use these Tikka T3 Stainless Lite rifles in their re-barreling and refinishing classes. “We are grateful to Beretta USA for these rifles,” said Gunsmithing Program Director Mark Dye. “It is because of this manufacturing partnership and others like it, that our students have access to exceptional firearms on which to practice new skills and techniques.” MCC’s Gunsmithing curriculum ranges from basic diagnostics and repair to true custom builds. MCC Receives $100k Cannon Grant

Thanks to generous support from The Cannon Foundation, Montgomery Community College will begin renovating its Metal Finishing Laboratory. The facility, located in Blair Hall, will be used for sandblasting, metal grinding, painting, application of manganese phosphate and black oxide, as well as the finishing and fabrication of various projects and mediums. The $100,000 Cannon Foundation grant will create a state-of-the-art metal finishing lab available to four of MCC’s programs: Gunsmithing, Knifemaking, Metal Engraving and Welding. MCC’s current facility, the former welding lab plus adjacent bluing room, is very cramped with poor ventilation. Bear Creek Arsenal Outfits MCC Armorer’s Class

In another act of generosity following its donation to renovate MCC’s bluing room, Bear Creek Arsenal supplied MCC’s gunsmithing program with AR-15 rifles to enhance student learning in its armorer’s class. More than two-thirds of an MCC gunsmithing student’s class time is spent in its shops, bringing theory to a practical application in a hands-on setting. In the case of these AR-15s, students will gain valuable experience diagnosing, disassembling and reassembling the automatic weapons. Bear Creek Arsenal (Sanford) specializes in the manufacture of AR-15 and AR-10 rifles, complete uppers, lowers, barrels, bolt carrier groups and automatic rifle parts.
