Gunsmithing, a Family Affair

Brian Gerdes has led a fascinating life, with fulfilling work, world travel, exciting career opportunities and a great family situation. Despite all that, he isn’t content to sit back and relax; Brian is exploring his next chapter, and he thinks the world of gunsmithing might be the best installment yet. A self-described military brat, Gerdes was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Germany. His father’s travels also took their family to Turkey, and stateside to Arizona, Georgia and Washington. MCC Cuts Ribbon at Greenhouse Site

MCC recently celebrated the establishment of a new greenhouse complex with a ribbon cutting ceremony. College trustees, students, faculty and community members were on hand to commemorate the completion of the two-year project. The complex includes an environmentally-controlled A-frame greenhouse along with a ventilated cold-frame structure, housing several hydroponic systems, including a 650-gallon aquaponics demonstration unit. In 2020, MCC received $375,000 in funding support from the Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to receive half of North Carolina’s funds from the master settlement agreement with cigarette manufacturers. MCC Receives Grant for MLK Event

Montgomery Community College is the recipient of a Randolph Electric Member Corporation People Helping People Sharing Success Community Grant. The funds will be used to support MCC’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day-On Challenge, an event which will take place at MCC on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 16, 2023. In a normal year, around 100 volunteers come to the MCC campus in Troy to spend an hour or less packing 10,000 ready-made meals. The support of Randolph Electric Member Corporation grant will allow MCC to once again provide 10,000 meals to residents in Montgomery County in need of food assistance. It is hard to imagine meeting a busier person than Russell Fuller. Not busy like a honey-do list (though I’m sure he has one of those) but busy in the sense of servitude, especially when it comes to events, projects and interests related to United States veterans. Though retired, this 82-year-old veteran keeps a full calendar, whether he is serving the Shiloh Church Association, completing paperwork and raising funds to commemorate the Warner Bridge, organizing and participating in Veteran’s Day events, serving on Biscoe’s monument committee, acting as president of the local veteran’s council or preserving and displaying a vast collection of militaria in Denton. MCC to Use Walmart Community Grant for Student Firefighters

The Health & Public Safety Program at Montgomery Community College has received a $2,000 Walmart Community Grant. In receiving this grant, MCC is part a long history of Walmart’s commitment to giving back to the communities where it operates. MCC is grateful to Walmart Store #2908 in Biscoe, and to the Walmart Community Grants team for its support of MCC’s work in Montgomery County. MCC will use the Walmart Community Grant funds to purchase materials to create liquid propane training props for the Health & Public Safety Program. MCC welding students will fabricate metal burn pans and a Christmas tree-like stand from pipes and cylinders to distribute flaming propane gas.

MCC Gunsmithing Program Receives Firearms Donation from Beretta USA

The Montgomery Community College Gunsmithing Program recently received 363 rifles from Beretta USA. A portion were purchased, but the bulk of the rifles were donated. MCC students will use these Tikka T3 Stainless Lite rifles in their re-barreling and refinishing classes. “We are grateful to Beretta USA for these rifles,” said Gunsmithing Program Director Mark Dye. “It is because of this manufacturing partnership and others like it, that our students have access to exceptional firearms on which to practice new skills and techniques.” MCC’s Gunsmithing curriculum ranges from basic diagnostics and repair to true custom builds. MCC Golf Tournament Funds Scholarships

MCC’s 24th annual golf tournament fundraiser provided over $17,000 in funds to support the MCC Foundation and the academic endeavors of Montgomery Community College students. The event, which took place April 8th at Densons Creek Golf Course in Troy, featured 16 teams of four players. “This year’s event represents our second-highest fundraising effort to date,” explains Korrie Ervin, MCC’s Director of Resource Development. “Funds from this event will support student scholarships, faculty and staff support, summer camps, diversity events and much more. We appreciate the generosity of our sponsors, the big-hearted nature of the individuals who play each year, and the volunteers who attend to make the event a success.”

MCC Foundation Conveys Two Annual Awards

The MCC Foundation Board awarded its Humanitarian of the Year and Fundraiser of the Year Awards at its March 2022 meeting. Award recipients were on hand to receive personal thank-yous in addition to commemorative pottery gifts crafted by Sydney Williams, director of MCC’s Heritage Crafts Program. The Humanitarian Award is given to the individual or group which most exemplifies a spirit of goodwill and generosity not only to the benefit of Montgomery Community College, but the community at large. 10,000 Meals from MLK “Day On” Event at MCC

Approximately 90 volunteers came together at Montgomery Community College to package over 10,000 meals in a half-day of service on March 11, 2022. Volunteers from MCC (students, faculty and staff), Communities in Schools, 4-H, Youth Leadership Montgomery, Eckerd Connects, East Middle School, Montgomery County Early College and Troy Rotary participated in the 12th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Day On” Challenge. Normally occurring in January, the event was rescheduled due to high COVID cases. The MLK Day On committee is a partnership between the MCC Human Services students, Communities in Schools, Eckerd Connect and Montgomery County Cooperative Extension. MCC Receives $100k Cannon Grant

Thanks to generous support from The Cannon Foundation, Montgomery Community College will begin renovating its Metal Finishing Laboratory. The facility, located in Blair Hall, will be used for sandblasting, metal grinding, painting, application of manganese phosphate and black oxide, as well as the finishing and fabrication of various projects and mediums. The $100,000 Cannon Foundation grant will create a state-of-the-art metal finishing lab available to four of MCC’s programs: Gunsmithing, Knifemaking, Metal Engraving and Welding. MCC’s current facility, the former welding lab plus adjacent bluing room, is very cramped with poor ventilation.
