MCC Forestry Program Finds Success at Cradle Competition

If someone said you lived near the Cradle of Forestry, would you know what they were talking about? Nestled in Western North Carolina, below the Blue Ridge Parkway, is the birthplace of forestry in America. A national historic site, the land was purchased by George and Edith Vanderbilt during a major logging boom. Dr. Carl Schenck, a forestry educator from Germany, helped the Vanderbilts with land management and re-forestation efforts that define sustainable forestry to this day. When George died in 1914, Edith sold 87,000 acres to the U.S. Forest Service, creating the Pisgah National Forest we know and love. MCC’s SBC Partners with SCA to Assist Marginalized Entrepreneurs

Montgomery Community College’s Small Business Center is partnering with the Sandhills Cooperation Association to empower future business leaders in Montgomery County’s marginalized communities.  Instead of asking entrepreneurs to come to MCC’s Page Street campus, SBC staff will conduct outreach initiatives through SCA’s network of trusted leaders and the locations they serve. The SBC will host a monthly Porch Talk series for business leaders at 117 Springdale Drive in Troy. Initial topics include how to get money to further education, how to pursue financing to build a business and the importance of building credit. MCC Conveys Annual Scholarships to Deserving Students

On the evening of August 25th, the Montgomery Community College Foundation awarded over $58,000 to students to attend the fall 2021 semester. These scholarships will be funded in the spring 2022 semester as well, putting education within reach of so many deserving students. Of the 62 scholarships awarded, 14 were to Montgomery Scholars, new students attending MCC right out of high school. This year, students and their donors were able to meet each other in person during a brief ceremony. MCC Foundation donors contribute to 99 endowed scholarships and 27 named scholarships as well as support various funds in the Foundation designed to benefit students. MCC Turns Up Heat on Pottery Program with New Kiln

Hundreds of students and thousands of pieces of pottery later, one of MCC’s nine kilns is due for retirement. The College’s 20 year-old salt kiln is undergoing a complete replacement, with a new structure being built from the ground up. For the state’s oldest pottery program, having an effective salt kiln is very important. “This is one of our hottest kilns” explains Pottery Program Director Sydney Williams. “Given the clays we use and the abundance of salt-fired work locally, having a new salt kiln for our students makes perfect sense.” Salt kilns function at what is called Cone 10, a pyrometric measure estimated at 2,345 degrees.
