MCC’s Taxidermy Program Takes Flight

MCC’s taxidermy classroom is full of feathers these days, with students hard at work bringing back lifelike qualities to an interesting beautiful group of birds. Both the day and evening classes cover fowl in their first semester, which is an important and logical first step in mastering taxidermy techniques. “Fowl are the best starting place for most students,” explains MCC taxidermy instructor Jordan McDuffie. “They are a manageable size for beginners, and birds really allow students the opportunity to test their artistic skills.” Turkeys, pheasants, owls, chickens, roosters and even swans have come through MCC’s taxidermy program, however most of McDuffie’s students are starting with ducks. “Ducks are readily available

MCC Seeing Growth in Sustainable Ag Program

In January of 2020 Montgomery Community College launched its Sustainable Agriculture program in the new Joseph Reese Blair Career and Technical Education Center, just two months prior to the College moving to fully-online instruction due to COVID-19. As with many programs housed in that facility, student experience was diminished due to the lack of hands-on activities. Today, the CTE Building, as it is known, is open and humming with student activity once again. The Sustainable Agriculture program is enjoying a rebirth of sorts, with new facilities, new activities and even a new instructor. Kim Morris Johnson, a Montgomery County native, is the current instructor for the program. Johnson has a

NC’s Future Forests are in Caring Hands

The concept of stewardship has always fascinated Amelia Thompson. A second year student in the Forest Management Technology program at Montgomery Community College in Troy, North Carolina, Thompson was searching for a way to serve God and people in the setting she prefers: nature. “The idea of caring for land and the trees on it came naturally to me because it represents a lot of my upbringing,” explains Thompson. She was raised and homeschooled in Morganton, a city on the Catawba River in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
