Top HVAC Student Recognized at MCC

Malco Tools, Incorporated has presented Montgomery Community College’s top HVAC student with a tool kit. Student Akeem Parker tops this year’s class. Led by Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology Department Chair Ed Hinson, this year’s cohort is bright, talented, motivated and employable. “In addition to choosing a growing, popular career area with ample employment opportunities, this recognition by Malco Tools demonstrates there are concrete rewards for doing great work,” explains Hinson. “Akeem has been such a capable student. He has a very bright future, and has been a good leader for our group.” Malco Tools also donated hats and extended tool bits kits for all members of Hinson’s class.

Shaina Griffin’s interest in automotive issues started when she was about eight years old. Her uncle had a Chevy Nova from the 1960s that she had early exposure to, and in the years that followed, as family vehicles encountered problems, she always seemed to be on the scene helping. “At first it was handing tools to people,” explains Shaina, “But as I got older, I listened and watched people diagnose problems and do repairs. MCC Celebrates “Made in Montgomery Day”

Montgomery Community College normally celebrates a fall Manufacturing Day, but this year they decided to expand the reach of the event to all businesses, not just manufacturers, calling it Made in Montgomery Day! Companies in attendance included Troy Lumber, Mohawk Industries, Inc., Saputo, Inc., Mountaire Farms, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Sandy Ridge Assisted Living, NEXT Gen, Montgomery County Schools, Myrick Construction, Southern Corrections – Department of Adult Corrections and McGee Brothers- Carolina Masonry Services. On October 25th, companies set up tables under a big white tent located between Montgomery Central High School and MCC. MCC Cuts Ribbon at Greenhouse Site

MCC recently celebrated the establishment of a new greenhouse complex with a ribbon cutting ceremony. College trustees, students, faculty and community members were on hand to commemorate the completion of the two-year project. The complex includes an environmentally-controlled A-frame greenhouse along with a ventilated cold-frame structure, housing several hydroponic systems, including a 650-gallon aquaponics demonstration unit. In 2020, MCC received $375,000 in funding support from the Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to receive half of North Carolina’s funds from the master settlement agreement with cigarette manufacturers. MCC Celebrates Manufacturing Day

After a year off due to COVID, MCC was thrilled to welcome area companies back to campus to celebrate Manufacturing Day 2021. Six businesses and two providers were on hand to meet with hundreds of MCHS and MCC students to promote the exciting careers awaiting them right here in Montgomery County. Autumn Care of Biscoe, Carolina Aseptic, Jordan Lumber Company, McRae Industries, Mohawk Industries and Troy Lumber Company joined Apprenticeship Montgomery and NCWorks set up booths beneath a large white tent, meeting students MCHS juniors and seniors throughout the day on October 28th. Quint Dunlap is still teaching, however he is now heading up Automotive Systems Technology at Montgomery Community College.
