MCC Turns Up Heat on Pottery Program with New Kiln

Hundreds of students and thousands of pieces of pottery later, one of MCC’s nine kilns is due for retirement. The College’s 20 year-old salt kiln is undergoing a complete replacement, with a new structure being built from the ground up. For the state’s oldest pottery program, having an effective salt kiln is very important. “This is one of our hottest kilns” explains Pottery Program Director Sydney Williams. “Given the clays we use and the abundance of salt-fired work locally, having a new salt kiln for our students makes perfect sense.” Salt kilns function at what is called Cone 10, a pyrometric measure estimated at 2,345 degrees. MCC Unveils 2021 NRA Short-Term Gunsmithing Classes

Montgomery Community College is pleased to announce its slate of NRA-endorsed Gunsmithing classes for the 2021 year. Over 40 classes are available, the earliest of which begin in mid-February. MCC Co-Recipient of $5 Million U.S Department of Labor Grant

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $5 million grant to a consortium of North Carolina community colleges called “Aligning the Workforce and Education System for Manufacturing” also known as AWESM. Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician Basic and related public safety courses will experience the state’s added driver training component in a new ambulance! Montgomery Community College invested around $30,000 for the vehicle with additional items inside the ambulance made possible through a generous donation by First Health of the Carolinas. MCC Hosts Technical Rescuer Class, Locates Lost Hunter

During the month of October, 36 emergency service men and women, representing 12 agencies, met at Montgomery Community College to complete the 60-hour North Carolina Technical Rescue Wilderness Rescue Certification Program. These students learned mapping, compass reading, tracking, survival, wilderness rescue, along with many other valuable wilderness survival lessons. During the class, a hunter was reported lost in the woods in Montgomery County. In support of their practical application exercise, the class used methods they learned during instruction to attempt to locate the hunter and were successful! MCC Launches GEER Scholarship Funding

The North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges recently approved a $72,750 allocation from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Scholarship Fund to Montgomery Community College. These funds were made available through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and awarded to the North Carolina Office of the Governor by the U.S. Department of Education. The College will use these funds for scholarships to eligible community college students pursuing high-demand workforce training programs within nine of MCC’s workforce pathways leading to a state or industry- recognized credential: Automotive, Construction, Criminal Justice, Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare, Industrial/Manufacturing, Information Technology, Transportation and Fire and Rescue Services.
