Youth Participate in MCC’s Culinary Camp

Seventeen youth participated in a four-day cooking event held at Montgomery Community College in July. The Recipe for Success Summer Culinary Camp was funded by a North Carolina Community College Adult Educators Association “Lead the Way” Grant. The Montgomery County chapter of Communities In Schools and Montgomery County Schools partnered with MCC to offer this camp free-of-charge to young students aged 10 to 14. Students prepared meals and dined together each day, ultimately compiling a take-home cookbook with nutritious recipes such as omelets, protein snacks, guacamole, spaghetti and more. New Leader for MCC Health & Public Safety Program

MCC’s Health & Public Safety Program has a new director. Greg Taylor, former director of the College’s institutional effectiveness efforts, has moved to oversee the health and safety initiatives within the Continuing Education Department. Programs under Taylor’s purview include Emergency Medical Service (EMS) including Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT); Healthcare Careers including Nurse Aide, Pharmacy Technician and Phlebotomy; and Public Safety Education in-service and specialty training for Law Enforcement, Correctional Officers and Firefighters. MCC Obtains Credentials as EMS Education Institution

Montgomery Community College has been named a credentialed North Carolina Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Provider Education Institution through April, 2025. The credential affords MCC the legal ability to offer Initial, Continuing Education and Recertification for Emergency Medical Response, Emergency Medical Technician and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician courses along with local Continuing Education for Paramedic courses. In Spring Semester 2022, MCC will offer four EMS classes: Community Paramedic which is offered online; Basic EMT, Advanced EMT and Emergency Medical Responder feature a hybrid format to include on-campus skills days. MCC’s SBC Partners with SCA to Assist Marginalized Entrepreneurs

Montgomery Community College’s Small Business Center is partnering with the Sandhills Cooperation Association to empower future business leaders in Montgomery County’s marginalized communities.  Instead of asking entrepreneurs to come to MCC’s Page Street campus, SBC staff will conduct outreach initiatives through SCA’s network of trusted leaders and the locations they serve. The SBC will host a monthly Porch Talk series for business leaders at 117 Springdale Drive in Troy. Initial topics include how to get money to further education, how to pursue financing to build a business and the importance of building credit. MCC Expands Heritage Crafts Offering

Sydney Williams is the new director of MCC’s Heritage Crafts program. Thus far the Heritage Crafts offerings include Pottery, Beekeeping, Homebrew and Taxidermy classes, however Williams expects the topic breadth to expand significantly. “Our students have considerable skills and love to use their hands to create,” explains Williams. “A robust Heritage Crafts curriculum will provide some structured training around already-popular disciplines. With Renovations Complete, MCC Welcomes New Academic Program

Improvements to “Building 500” on the Montgomery Community College Campus are finished, heralding the arrival of the College’s newest academic program, a Public Safety Administration degree. Public safety administration is the study of disaster relief, response, preparedness and recovery. The Public Safety Administration program will be offered at the degree, diploma and certificate level. Montgomery Community College is offering free Career & College Readiness classes to help individuals earn a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma, learn English, improve spelling, math, and writing skills, or generally improve their academic skills in preparation for college-level coursework. These no-cost classes employ various instructional methods designed to meet students’ unique learning needs. An Accidental Beekeeper

In the summer of 2007, Shirley Harris noticed her cucumbers were growing really well. MCC to Teach Detention Officer Certification Course

The North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission has approved Montgomery Community College to deliver its 174-hour Detention Officer Certification Course. The college’s accreditation became effective March 16, 2021, and the school is making plans to admit its first cohort of officers on June 7, 2021. The 174-hour course, which is taught over a five week period, is delivered in four units: the legal unit, the physical unit, the practical application unit and the medical unit. MCC’s Campus Buzzing with New Apiary

“Apiary” is the technical term given to an area where beehives are kept, and MCC now has one. In the southwestern corner of campus, between the Forestry Building and its new under-construction equipment shed, MCC has welcomed two colonies of bees housed in white Langstroth hives. Each Langstroth hive sits atop a sturdy pine stand donated by Tony and Shirley Harris, the President of the Beekeeping Association for Montgomery County and avid member of MCC’s beekeeping family.  The hives feature vertically-hung frames, a bottom platform as an entrance for the bees and boxes for bees to live and breed and other areas for honey storage.
