MCC Hosts Extrication Weekend

In late May, MCC’s Department of Health & Public Safety hosted an Extrication Weekend. Extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around a person who has been involved in a motor vehicle collision, when conventional means of exit are impossible or inadvisable. First responders use a delicate approach in order to minimize injury to the victim during the extrication. Extrication procedures are often accomplished by using chocks, bracing for stabilization and powered rescue tools and equipment such as Jaws of Life. Two MCC employees recently completed the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program. Jessica Hamilton, Director of Business & Industry Services and Amy Frieary, Dean of Health and Human Services finished the six-month leadership program designed to provide participants with organized, face-to-face experiences to help them develop skills needed to lead in a community college atmosphere. Montgomery Community College is pleased to announce Hunter Smith as its new Dean of Continuing Education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from UNC-Pembroke, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University, and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree from Liberty University in higher education administration. Prior to accepting this role, Hunter served as MCC’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Research/SACSCOC Liaison. John Boalick is the new director of MCC’s Heritage Crafts program, and coordinator for the college’s pottery program. MCC’s Heritage Crafts offerings include Pottery, Beekeeping, Homebrewing, Exercise and Taxidermy classes, however Boalick expects the programs topic breadth to expand significantly in the coming years. “Our students have considerable skills and love to use their hands to create,” explains Boalick. “A robust Heritage Crafts curriculum will provide the public with a variety of structured learning opportunities within already-popular disciplines. MCC Certifies Water Rescue Participants

Sixteen emergency services personnel from across North Carolina completed their Technical Rescue – Water Rescue Certification in late September. The “TR” course, provided by Montgomery Community College, normally takes place over a full week, however pressure from incoming Hurricane Ian packed 48 hours of work into a four-day span. “Nothing like a hurricane to motivate folks to finish their water rescue training!” said Greg Taylor, a course instructor and MCC’s Director of Health & Public Safety Programs. “We knew when we started on September 26th we had to wrap this up quickly to get folks back home and off the roads. MCC to Provide Custom, High-Tech Training to Mohawk Employees

Montgomery Community College has secured over $70,000 in state funds for customized training based on systems upgrades and equipment for Mohawk Industries, Incorporated. Mohawk Industries, Incorporated in Mt. Gilead is one of the company’s four locations in North Carolina. In 2006, Mohawk purchased Montgomery County-based Homanit USA, an existing medium density fiberboard manufacturer. Mohawk has since invested greater than 40 million dollars in new technology and will partner with Montgomery Community College to provide the needed training that will allow employees to support and maintain the company’s new technology.
