MCC Cuts Ribbon at Greenhouse Site

MCC recently celebrated the establishment of a new greenhouse complex with a ribbon cutting ceremony. College trustees, students, faculty and community members were on hand to commemorate the completion of the two-year project. The complex includes an environmentally-controlled A-frame greenhouse along with a ventilated cold-frame structure, housing several hydroponic systems, including a 650-gallon aquaponics demonstration unit. In 2020, MCC received $375,000 in funding support from the Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to receive half of North Carolina’s funds from the master settlement agreement with cigarette manufacturers. Montgomery Community College is delighted to announce the arrival of its new Director of College and Career Readiness, Debra Sikes. Deb joins MCC with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree in school counseling and educational leadership from Stephen F. Austin University and superintendent certification from Lamar University. While she clearly spent significant time in Texas, she moved to North Carolina four years ago after falling in love with the area. MCC Receives Grant for MLK Event

Montgomery Community College is the recipient of a Randolph Electric Member Corporation People Helping People Sharing Success Community Grant. The funds will be used to support MCC’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day-On Challenge, an event which will take place at MCC on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 16, 2023. In a normal year, around 100 volunteers come to the MCC campus in Troy to spend an hour or less packing 10,000 ready-made meals. MCC to Provide Custom, High-Tech Training to Mohawk Employees

Montgomery Community College has secured over $70,000 in state funds for customized training based on systems upgrades and equipment for Mohawk Industries, Incorporated. Mohawk Industries, Incorporated in Mt. Gilead is one of the company’s four locations in North Carolina. In 2006, Mohawk purchased Montgomery County-based Homanit USA, an existing medium density fiberboard manufacturer. Mohawk has since invested greater than 40 million dollars in new technology and will partner with Montgomery Community College to provide the needed training that will allow employees to support and maintain the company’s new technology. These tasty, hot cylinders are a common companion to Chinese takeout in America, however two Troy-based entrepreneurs have made eggrolls an entrée, moving far beyond the typical pork and cabbage option. Ronny Xiong’s family heritage is Hmong, an ethnic group hailing from Southwest China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. He grew up in a rich culinary tradition, surrounded by good cooks with a knack for using spices, and as he grew up, he too learned his way around a kitchen. Youth Participate in MCC’s Culinary Camp

Seventeen youth participated in a four-day cooking event held at Montgomery Community College in July. The Recipe for Success Summer Culinary Camp was funded by a North Carolina Community College Adult Educators Association “Lead the Way” Grant. The Montgomery County chapter of Communities In Schools and Montgomery County Schools partnered with MCC to offer this camp free-of-charge to young students aged 10 to 14. Students prepared meals and dined together each day, ultimately compiling a take-home cookbook with nutritious recipes such as omelets, protein snacks, guacamole, spaghetti and more. MCC to Use Walmart Community Grant for Student Firefighters

The Health & Public Safety Program at Montgomery Community College has received a $2,000 Walmart Community Grant. In receiving this grant, MCC is part a long history of Walmart’s commitment to giving back to the communities where it operates. MCC is grateful to Walmart Store #2908 in Biscoe, and to the Walmart Community Grants team for its support of MCC’s work in Montgomery County. MCC will use the Walmart Community Grant funds to purchase materials to create liquid propane training props for the Health & Public Safety Program. MCC welding students will fabricate metal burn pans and a Christmas tree-like stand from pipes and cylinders to distribute flaming propane gas.

MCC Foundation Conveys Two Annual Awards

The MCC Foundation Board awarded its Humanitarian of the Year and Fundraiser of the Year Awards at its March 2022 meeting. Award recipients were on hand to receive personal thank-yous in addition to commemorative pottery gifts crafted by Sydney Williams, director of MCC’s Heritage Crafts Program. The Humanitarian Award is given to the individual or group which most exemplifies a spirit of goodwill and generosity not only to the benefit of Montgomery Community College, but the community at large. 10,000 Meals from MLK “Day On” Event at MCC

Approximately 90 volunteers came together at Montgomery Community College to package over 10,000 meals in a half-day of service on March 11, 2022. Volunteers from MCC (students, faculty and staff), Communities in Schools, 4-H, Youth Leadership Montgomery, Eckerd Connects, East Middle School, Montgomery County Early College and Troy Rotary participated in the 12th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Day On” Challenge. Normally occurring in January, the event was rescheduled due to high COVID cases. The MLK Day On committee is a partnership between the MCC Human Services students, Communities in Schools, Eckerd Connect and Montgomery County Cooperative Extension.
