Now that most of us have cleaned away the yellow tree pollen that plagues North Carolinians during the month of April each year, it seems to be a good time to learn about another kind of pollination which is happening all around us during the summer months, thanks to many busy insects and animals such as wasps, moths, butterflies, birds, bats and, yes, more than 3,500 species of bees. MCC Foundation Hosts Fifth Annual Shooting Clay Tournament

Fifteen teams comprised of 60 shooters headed down to Ellerbe on a gorgeous fall morning for the MCC Foundation’s fifth annual Shooting Clay Tournament. DeWitt’s Outdoor Sports hosted the competition which featured 14 shooting stations with two shooting boxes at each station. The course, over a mile long, winds through wooded areas, fields and duck pond habitats. The annual contest also offers a flurry shoot, where all team members aim at clays released simultaneously from DeWitt’s state-of-the-art automated traps. “This event is one of our favorites, and is becoming very popular. We had 15 teams participate this year, our highest count yet,” explains Emily Tucker, MCC’s Director of Resource Development.

MCC Celebrates “Made in Montgomery Day”

Montgomery Community College normally celebrates a fall Manufacturing Day, but this year they decided to expand the reach of the event to all businesses, not just manufacturers, calling it Made in Montgomery Day! Companies in attendance included Troy Lumber, Mohawk Industries, Inc., Saputo, Inc., Mountaire Farms, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Sandy Ridge Assisted Living, NEXT Gen, Montgomery County Schools, Myrick Construction, Southern Corrections – Department of Adult Corrections and McGee Brothers- Carolina Masonry Services. On October 25th, companies set up tables under a big white tent located between Montgomery Central High School and MCC. Campers to Crime Solvers

This past summer, area youth enjoyed a three-day immersion experience focused on criminal justice. Montgomery Community College’s “Mystery on the LEGEND Express” summer camp was presented in partnership with Montgomery County Schools and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The first day began with a visit to Montgomery County’s 911 Communication Center. The group also received a full-blown tour of the Montgomery County court house, which included time observing superior court and civil court proceedings. Judges, clerks and attorneys told campers about their careers, how they became interested in public service and answered student questions. MCC Foundation Sets Fundraising Record at Annual Community Event

The Montgomery Community College Foundation extends sincere thanks to the hundreds of community members who attended or donated to the college’s annual auction fundraiser, held on September 22, 2023. The event, called Boots, Bling and Blue Jeans, featured country-western music and a beef brisket/smoked chicken buffet. Around 300 people attended the event, raising a record $33,000 for MCC’s scholarship fund. In addition to ten $100 winners drawn throughout the evening, the Foundation draws a $5,000 grand prize winner. This year’s grand prize went to Kenneth and Phyllis Cagle, who operate Aire Serv of Central North Carolina, a Biscoe-based HVAC repair and maintenance company. In 2022 the MCC Foundation awarded $152,061.71

Leadership Montgomery Celebrates 27th Graduating Class

Judy Stevens, retired Chamber and Economic Development Director, discovered leadership programs being offered in other counties around North Carolina and wanted to implement a local program to generate awareness of the “Golden Opportunities” that exist in Montgomery County. “Leadership Montgomery” kicked off in the fall of 1994 with 29 participants representing private businesses, municipalities and service providers.  The class of 2023 which graduated in mid-May marked the fourth year that Savannah Heath, Economic Development Director of Montgomery County, and Jessica Hamilton, Director of Business and Industries Services at Montgomery Community College have co-facilitated the program which is now championed by the Montgomery Community College Foundation. A Family Called to Serve

James Atkins, Police Chief for the Town of Troy, North Carolina is teaching at Montgomery Community College tonight, as he has off and on for the last 18 years. MCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program runs September through April, with a minimum of 660 hours of classroom time. Successful BLET students master 36 separate topics from physical fitness, crime scene investigation, first responder, testifying in court, human trafficking, constitutional law and more. Tonight, Atkins is teaching a section on crime prevention. Thousands of Meals from MLK “Day On” Event at MCC

Approximately 75 volunteers met at Montgomery Community College to package nearly 10,000 meals in a half-day of service on January 23, 2023. Volunteers from MCC (students, faculty and staff), Communities in Schools, 4-H, Youth Leadership Montgomery, Eckerd Connects, East Middle School, Montgomery County Early College and Troy Rotary participated in the 13th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Day On” Challenge. Montgomery Community College was the recipient of a Randolph Electric Member Corporation People Helping People Sharing Success Community Grant. The funds totaling $2,000 supported the meal preparation event. Over 9,500 sealed meals were bagged and placed into boxes that were distributed to Montgomery County Food Pantries and the Backpack Pals program, providing nutritious
