MCC Recognizes Annual Scholarship Recipients

On August 27th, around 80 Montgomery Community College students received financial awards from the very special people and organizations who endow scholarships at the College. Students and their donors were able to meet each other in person during a ceremony and post-event reception. The evening began with the presentation of merit awards, which are scholarships based on a student’s performance in their program and recommendations from their instructors.  The next group of awards, in its third year, were scholarships awarded to continuing education students through an established endowed fund. Top HVAC Student Recognized at MCC

Malco Tools, Incorporated has presented Montgomery Community College’s top HVAC student with a tool kit. Student Akeem Parker tops this year’s class. Led by Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology Department Chair Ed Hinson, this year’s cohort is bright, talented, motivated and employable. “In addition to choosing a growing, popular career area with ample employment opportunities, this recognition by Malco Tools demonstrates there are concrete rewards for doing great work,” explains Hinson. “Akeem has been such a capable student. He has a very bright future, and has been a good leader for our group.” Malco Tools also donated hats and extended tool bits kits for all members of Hinson’s class.

MCC’s Forestry Club Competes at Annual Cradle Competition

MCC left its mark at the John G. Palmer Woodsmen’s Meet, held in the Pisgah National Forest on October 7, 2023. Competing against other Forest Management colleges like Haywood Community College, Mountain Gateway Community College, Wayne Community College, North Carolina State University and Penn State Mont Alto, MCC achieved impressive placements in various events! Each fall, during its employee kick-off to the school year called Quality Trails, Montgomery Community College recognizes employees who are marking years of service to the institution, as well as the staff person of the year and the faculty member of the year. Fourteen students, three with an Associate Degree in Nursing and eleven from the Practical Nursing program received a commemorative pin and a nurse’s cap to remember their accomplishments. Two MCC employees recently completed the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program. Jessica Hamilton, Director of Business & Industry Services and Amy Frieary, Dean of Health and Human Services finished the six-month leadership program designed to provide participants with organized, face-to-face experiences to help them develop skills needed to lead in a community college atmosphere. The North Carolina Community College Leadership Program was founded in 1989 to develop and enhance essential skills to support current and future leadership roles in the North Carolina Community College System. Thirty-three Montgomery Community College students were inducted into the college’s Beta Xi Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society on April 27th. Family and friends were in attendance to celebrate the occasion. The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to promote scholarship, the development of leadership and service, and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students. This year’s Inductees have worked hard to meet the eligibility for Phi Theta Kappa, completing at least 12 semester hours of associate degree general education coursework with a grade point average of 3.5. Nominated for the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award, Reagan Hunsucker of Troy will graduate this spring with an Associate in Science degree, a Nurse Aide I Certificate and a Phlebotomy Certificate. In 2004, the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents created the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award as a way to recognize student leadership on a statewide level while also honoring former Governor Bob Scott. The MCC Foundation Board awarded its Humanitarian of the Year and Fundraiser of the Year Awards at its February 2023 meeting. Award recipients were on hand to receive personal thank-yous in addition to commemorative pottery gifts crafted by John Boalick, director of MCC’s Heritage Crafts Program. The Humanitarian Award is given to the individual or group which most exemplifies a spirit of goodwill and generosity not only to the benefit of Montgomery Community College, but the community at large.
